San Diego unemployment rate 3.7% in August 2004

September 14th, 2004 · No Comments

San Diego County’s unemployment rate plunged sharply to 3.7 percent in August – its lowest point this year – as the local economy continued to outpace the state and nation as an engine of job growth.

Fueled by new hiring in professional services, construction, hotels and restaurants, the county added 4,200 jobs in August.

That’s more than half the state’s net gain in jobs during the month, according to data released yesterday by the California Employment Development Department.

“San Diego’s really the jewel of California,” said Sung Won Sohn, an economist with Wells Fargo. “It never really got into the recession, thanks to its diverse economy that mixes tourism, technology and trade with Mexico and Asia. Everything that could go right has gone right.”
