On a day to day basis consumers are already bombarded from every angle by companies who are fighting for business. Whether it is a phone salesperson or the credit card offer in the mail, the consumer’s privacy is beginning to dwindle.
We find it incredible, but did you know that when you apply for a mortgage and your credit is pulled via one of the major credit reporting bureaus that your information is then sold off to solicitors as a lead…. and it is perfectly legal? There is, however; a way to prevent this and it is with the help of two websites.
Both quite different but very effective in protecting privacy of the consumer. Optoutprescreen.com allows you to opt out of receiving offers in the mail for various lines of credit and/or insurance. Should you wish to again begin receiving credit or insurance applications in the mail, the website allows you to opt “back in” so that your information will be available to marketing mailings. The opting out timeframe lasts 5 years or you also have the option to request it for a lifetime.
donotcall.gov allows you to remove all phone numbers, both land line and cell, that you do not wish to be contacted on by solicitors - you will be protected for 5 years and you must then re-register on the site to continue protection. Both websites are quite user friendly and informative.
