The Del Mar Races and it’s roots

July 25th, 2007 · No Comments

It’s that time again! The Del Mar Track is open and the season runs through Wednesday Sept. 5, 2007. The annual opening day attracts visitors to the track from miles around for the well known “Opening Day” Hat Contest.

The races have been a popular day trip for many since 1937 when Bing Crosby was there to greet the very first Del Mar Track visitor. In the late 30’s the track was very popular with the silver screen stars of Hollywood, as well as with San Diegan residents and out of town guests.

Sadly, during World War II the track became “dark” during the mid 40’s to allow for marine training as well as for manufacturing of B-17 Bomber parts. In 1945 the war ends and the track has a 20,324 turn out! The track has a record betting total of $958,476! In the 50’s the average daily crowd totals go into the five digit range, and it becomes clear the races will only continue to grow in popularity.

The track continues its growth into the 90’s and becomes rated the number one track in the country for sales volume and attendance. Heading into 2000, the track ranks 1st nationally for average daily attendance for the 10th year in a row! The track today still brings in large crowds and continued entertainment for all. Many families although they live full time out of town, they have purchased homes or condos near the track so that when they visit they are conveniently close to all the fun. You would be surprised how many race goers have second (or 3rd or 4th) homes in Rancho Santa Fe or Del Mar just for the race season. If you are curious search for homes here. Written by Shawn McDonald.
