Families on Soledad Mountain Road in La Jolla are still in dismay over the landslide that recently occurred causing significant damage to 7 homes and leaving approximately 40 that are currently deemed uninhabitable. It is estimated that the total damages done to city works is $26 million and $22 million to private property.
Mayor Jerry Sanders’ requests for help were heard by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and he agreed to deem the City of San Diego in a state of emergency. In doing so the State Office of Emergency Services (OES) is able to send emergency personnel and equipment to San Diego to assist in the relief efforts. Under the California Disaster Assistance Act, the OES can also offer local government assistance to the City of San Diego. In addition, Caltrans will also be able to get involved with the efforts to help.
Although the assistance being offered is somewhat reassuring to those affected, there still are many unanswered questions and residents who are without their homes are still not sure if any of these agencies can assist them personally and financially.
Everyone has seen apictures of the damage - here is a Google Earth image before the landslide.
